Building

A Helping Hand

You may have an interest in one of our many committees. These committees meet on a periodic basis and help provide direction for our affiliate. These committees include: Site Selection, Finance, Family Support, Development, Construction, Church Relations, Public Relations, Volunteer Relations, Family Selection, and the Nominating Committee.

On the fourth Saturday of every month, we have our monthly volunteer meeting, called Habitalk, where you can fill out an application and find out how you can best help us. Meetings are held at our office located at, 110 Railroad Ave., Suite A-3, Suisun City.

Here’s how to become a construction volunteer:

  • Volunteers must be at least 14 years old,
  • 14 - 16 year olds need parental supervision and not can work in construction. They can engage in limited “on site” activities such as clearing lots, landscaping, or painting. They must be accompanied by at least one adult for every 3 children.
  • 16 - 17 year olds may perform general construction work, but may not engage in certain activities that are considered “ultra hazardous.” These include the use of power tools, motor vehicles, demolition, roofing and excavation operations.
  • Call SHFH at (707) 422-1948 extension 3# or go to the latest construction page with a link on the home page to find out where we are building and the address.
  • Complete the volunteer release and emergency contact forms and bring them with you to the build.
  • Wear sturdy, hard-soled shoes, bring work gloves, and a hat, if ypu have them. Bring sunscreen. No other tools are required. (A nail apron, safety glasses, tool belt with a hammer and tape measure are always helpful.)
  • If you want to volunteer as a group, simply call the SHFH office.
  • If you have a construction, landscape, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, interior design or other specialty and would like to put your skills to use, simply call SHFH and we will work closely with you to integrate you in the schedule
